75th ANNUAL N.E.I.G.A CHAMPIONSHIP HELD OCTOBER 18-20, 2009

 
 

 

Brewster , Mass. -- Teams from 40 colleges and universities across New England gathered Sunday through Tuesday, October 18-20, 2009 for the 75th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship .

The event attracted 200 golfers to The Captains Golf Course in Brewster and its 36-hole layout on Cape Cod. NEIGA was pleased to have Cleveland Golf / Srixon as the “Presenting Sponsor” again this year.

The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes 45 member colleges and universities in New England making this the oldest and largest college golf tournament in the country. It is unique in that Divisions I, II and III compete together.

Jason Thresher of Bryant University was medalist with a score of 141 for the 36-hole tournament.

Division I University of Connecticut (under the leadership of Coach Dave Pezzino) won the tournament with a two-day score of 582. The Div. I runner-up was Central Connecticut with a score of 588. American International College was the Division II leaders with a score of 606 followed by Post University at 619. Salem State led the Div. III teams with a total of 609 followed by Trinity College (CT) at 610.

At a banquet at The Irish Village in West Yarmouth on Sunday night, the following awards were presented. The 2009 Guy Tedesco (Player) Award was awarded to Jeffrey Santora of Salem State College. The Gordon McCullough (Coach) Award was awarded to Bill Dietrick, coach of Trinity College. Coach Arthur “Archie” Boulet of Bryant University was presented with a special recognition award. Inspirations speaker of the evening was Coach Rich Parker of Dartmouth College

Special events were held on Monday afternoon at the finish of the first round. The long-drive contest was won by Kevin Josephson of Central Connecticut State with a drive of 337 yards. Greg Strattner of American International College won the putting contest and the bunker contest winner was Alex Macielak of Bentley University.
